Description:

For low-income youth, afterschool programs in their communities are a critical resource – and often their only resource – for broadening their educational opportunities and helping them prepare for college. Afterschool programs are ideal settings to create a “college-rich” environment where applying to and attending college become less of an anomaly and more of a natural next step toward larger life goals. This two day institute will explore key aspects of effective college prep programs including appropriate staffing, engagement of parents/caregivers, and connecting with middle schools, high schools and colleges. Participants will also gain a better understanding of the design components that best meet young people’s academic and social emotional needs as well as how to provide support around the college application process.

By institute’s end, participants will have a better sense of what aspects of college prep services they have the capacity to provide and will walk away with the beginning of an action plan for next steps they will take at their sites.

Participants are required to attend both days of the institute. Sites can register up to three staff members for this institute. If space permits closer to the workshop date, we may be able to allow additional staff members to attend as well.
