Job Description:

Reports directly to the Academic Specialist and Educational Coordinator

 

 

 

Position Availability: February 2011-May 2011, three-five days/week, depending on location, afternoon hours (up to 25 hours total)
 
Job Responsibilities: Work closely with a small group of youth, tutoring them on their homework, monitoring their educational progress both in school and within the after-school program, and providing outreach to their families to build support for their educational success.
 
Specific duties include:
Assisting Academic Specialist with small group and one-on-one tutoring
Supporting Academic Specialist with organization and delivery of program
Supervising members participating in program
Conducting one-on-one daily mini-conferences with the children to see how school went that day, what subjects gave them the most challenge and determine what topics they need more tutoring in.
Establish ongoing communication with key staff of the youth’s school, including teachers, assistance, principals.
Reviewing, together with the child, all report cards and using the report card information to set joint goals for academic improvement
Providing ongoing, positive feedback to motivate youth to achieve their academic potential
Conducting at least one face-to-face meeting with the child’s family (together with the child), and following up with weekly phone calls, emails, etc.
Communicating with families on a regular basis to explain the program and its goals, go over the children’s report cards, ask about the children’s academic strengths and areas where the parent feels they need more support, and get any information which will help the tutor understand and engage the youth in tutoring sessions.
Providing regular phone calls/voices messages to the family with updates on the child, especially with positive remarks about things the child is doing well or has improved in.
 

Required Skills/Experience:

 

 

  • Master's degree, education degree
  • Must be able to work with a variety of youth, particularly those considered at-risk.
  • Position requires good organizational an dplanning skills, high creativity and the ability to work with minimum supervision.
