We are looking for a dynamic and compassionate Advocate Counselor, FDR High School to work with youth and their families in a collaborative effort between Good Shepherd Services (GSS) and the Department of Education (DOE). The Advocate Counselor, FDR High School utilizes a youth development model that actively engages young people and supports academic success through individual and group counseling and related activities. Reports to:SENIOR PROGRAM DIRECTOR, F.D.R. High School Location:5800 20th Avenue, Brooklyn, New York 11204 Hours:35 Hours/Week; Non-Exempt; Monday through Friday 8:30am to 4:30pm,(10 Month school year position, September - June) Major Duties: • Provide case management for students identified as needing supportive services in order to achieve academic success. • Assist students in attending school regularly, on time, accumulating credits and without cutting classes through rapid identification of obstacles and connecting with resources; attendance outreach including home visits. • Provide assessments and individual and group counseling. • Provide crisis intervention as needed. • Provide family outreach and involvement activities as appropriate to support family engagement and participation in the school community and the lives of their youth. • Develop and implement workshops responsive to student needs. • Facilitate engagement activities. • Organize and participate in GSS and DOE trips. • Support and participate in school-wide events including BBQs, Award Ceremonies, Showcases, Parent-Teacher Night and Student Orientations. • Support students with all aspects of the college preparation process including applications, financial aid, personal essay, and college visits. • Develop positive relationships with DOE staff, specifically school guidance counselors and school social worker. • Provide crisis intervention as needed. • Refer youth and families to relevant resources within Good Shepherd Services and other community organizations. • Encourages, embodies, and fosters a strengths based approach grounded in youth development principals. • Collaborate with key school players on behalf of students: deans, teachers, guidance counselors, safety agents. • Function as an active member of the Good Shepherd Services and school teams. • Participate in staff/team meetings and DOE meetings as needed. • Perform statistical, narrative, and record keeping duties as required including data base entry. • Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications: • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field required. Masters Degree preferred in Social Work, School Counseling, Mental Health Counseling, or other related field. • Prior experience in high school setting preferred. • Committed to upholding an inclusive environment in program that fosters a sense of community, belonging and connectedness. • Bilingual English/Spanish or English/Cantonese or English/Mandarin or English/Arabic or English/Urdu or English/Bengali or English/Uzbek required. • Must be able to work occasional evenings and weekends. • Must have excellent organizational, verbal and written communication skills. • Must have a commitment to work from a strength-based and/or youth development perspective.
