Job Description:
The Harlem Children’s Zone Booker T. Washington Beacon 54 is seeking a highly-motivated, organized, detail-oriented professional with program and/or project management experience to lead and coordinate the day-to-day activities of the program. The Assistant Program Director is an integral part of the core management team and is responsible for providing vision, support, and direction to the Program Coordinators, as well as about 100 part-time staff who serve more than 500 children and 1,500 families annually through after-school, summer day camp, and community programming. Additionally, the Assistant Program Director will be responsible for maintaining excellent relationships with the key program stakeholders and community members.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Under the guidance and leadership of the respective Program Director, the Assistant Program Director will:
- Direct staff to ensure efficient, successful delivery of program services
- Develop programs, procedures and processes where needed, including student services, operations, as well as staffing and budgets
- Enforce all program policies and procedures to ensure the safety of students and staff and compliance with regulations enumerated by the Department of Health; the Department of Youth and Community Development; and the School Age Child Care license requirements
- Develop workshops and educational opportunities that encourage academic enrichment across targeted demographics
- Ensure the Center is always prepared for planned as well as impromptu site visits and all data is ready for instantaneous communication with members of the Senior Management team
- Monitor academic progress of program participants
- Help establish, manage, and coordinate activities and events for program participants
- Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with DYCD, community organizations, schools and parents to meet the needs of children and families
- Form and build up relationships with schools attended by program participants
- Assists with supervision of Coordinators, Instructors, Teachers, and Activity Specialists
- Ensure programs are consistently in compliance with both HCZ and DYCD, and meet and exceed the goals set where appropriate
- Participate in the determination of organizational policies regarding such issues as participant eligibility, program requirements, and program benefits
- Review and ensure completion of all reports as required by DYCD
- Mentor and develop program staff, including managing and tracking work and evaluating performance
- Foster strong relationships and effective communications with HCZ senior leadership and staff
- Performs other duties as assigned
Required Skills/Experience:
Qualification, Skill and Knowledge Requirements
- A demonstrated commitment to the mission and programs of HCZ
- Bachelor’s degree with 5+ years of progressive educational or social service experience
- Knowledge of and sensitivity to issues prevalent in underserved communities of color
- Demonstrated record of meeting and exceeding goals and positively impacting children, their families, and the community as a whole
- Proven ability to deal with parents and children in an educational/social service setting
- Strong management skills, including ability to develop others
- Excellent project and case management skills
- Excellent writing and communication skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Outlook
- Unimpeachable ethical standards, confidentiality, and personal integrity, seasoned with humor and perspective
- Ability to work flexible hours, as required by the demands of the program
