Job Description:


The childcare assistant teacher/substitute shall assist the classroom staff in implementing a structured classroom om. The assistant/substitute shall be responsible for aiding the lead teacher in the implementation of the daily schedule and routine, leading activities, ensuring safety and security of clients, and supervision of clients. The assistant/substitute shall develop nurturing relationships with the students within a context of consistency and structured routines.

Duties and Responsibilities

Assistant/substitute teacher receives direct supervision from the Director of Early Childhood Education/Education Supervisor

  • Use daily classroom events as opportunities to assist students in developing more appropriate behavior, social skills and coping skills

  • Assist childcare teacher in development and implementation of a structured classroom environment

  • Assist in maintaining constant supervision of students

  • Supervise classroom routines including toileting and meal time

  • Work with childcare teacher in maintaining a safe and healthy environment for students.

  • Assist with keeping the classroom organized and arranged appropriately.

  • Ensure materials are available to childcare teacher when needed to carry out activities.

  • Model acceptable behaviors and utilize behavior management techniques in classroom.

  • Keep childcare teacher and the Director of Early Childhood Education/Education Supervisor informed of problems that arise in the classroom.

  • Assist childcare teacher in maintaining good communication with parents/legal guardians.

  • Attend training, workshops, and seminars as requested by the Director of Early Childhood Education and childcare requirements.  

  • Build good communications and cooperate with other staff to create and maintain a professional atmosphere.

  • Cooperate with staff members regarding program decisions.

  • Participate in required staff meetings and staff development as requested by the Director of Early Childhood Education/Education Supervisor.

  • Communicate with staff members regarding clients' issues and parent/legal guardian communications.

  • Assists Director of Early Childhood Education, Education Supervisor and Administrative Supervisor as needed.

Position Requirements


  • Candidates must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or equivalent (GED) and be New York State certified as an assistant teacher, as well as have the appropriate training in the field with 3 years prior experience

  • DOE/DOI Fingerprint Clearance

  • SCR clearance

  • Child Abuse and Maltreatment certificate (taken every 2 years online)

  • Infectious Disease Certificate

  • Food Handlers Certificate
