Job Description:

Good Shepherd Services, a leading NYC non-profit committed to the success of young people and families, is currently seeking a College Access Counselor, for our Brooklyn Frontiers Program in Brooklyn.


In conjunction with Good Shepherd Services (GSS) transfer high school staff, the College Access Counselor develops and implements successful college access strategies and services, creating a culture that embraces college as a viable option and supports attainment of this through the provision of a full array of individual and group college readiness activities. The College Access Counselor also works in conjunction with the Transfer School staff to plan and implement retention activities for graduates.



  • Collaborates with staff to offer college readiness activities to the broader student population and to create a culture of college anticipation in the school
  • Participates in regular meetings with school staff on college and career readiness (includes, but not limited to the Learning to Work Internship Coordinator, Guidance Counselor and other school designees as necessary)
  • Develops activities that enhance exploration of college as a post-secondary choice and option.
  • Works with Advocate Counselors to assure that each student creates a clear attainable postgraduate plan.
  • Provides direct individual and group college advisement.
  • Arranges for student participation in college fairs, tours and retreats.
  • Arranges speakers and panels related to college issues.
  • Provides information on financial aid and planning and assistance with FAFSA and scholarship applications, as well as applications to SEEK, EOP, HEOP and College Discovery programs.
  • Provides assistance with college choice, exploration and completion of college applications in a timely manner.
  • Provides workshops for parents on financial aid and the college choice and application process to inform and to attain their support for a college option.
  • Creates and maintains social networking Internet sites for alumnae.
  • Regularly updates student contact information.
  • Provide parent orientation for students proceeding on to college in collaboration with school staff.
  • Plans and implements regular meetings for alumnae in collaboration with school leadership
  • Acts as a liaison with Kingsborough Community College and New York City Technology in collaboration with school leadership as we develop deeper connections with these institutions.
  • Conduct periodic surveys of school alumnae and prepare statistical reports.
  • Maintains all required statistical and narrative documentation.
  • Participates in staff training and meetings, including school retreats and professional development.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Experience:


  • Bachelor's degree in a related field and prior experience working with young adults required.
  • Prior workshop/seminar development and implementation experience preferred; prior college counseling experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong ability to create engaging and relevant activities for students and their families connected to college.
  • Ability to work weekends, including overnight when necessary.
  • Ability to travel to GSS program sites throughout Brooklyn.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Must have excellent organizational, teamwork, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must have a commitment of work from a strength-based and/or youth development perspective.
