Job Description:

The Sunnyside Family Literacy Program at P.S. 199 is grounded in the belief that literacy development goes hand in hand with personal development, and like personal development it is a process and an unfolding. The program will address the educational and individual needs of parents and their school-aged children through a coordinated set of four components: ESL, Children’s Education, Parent And Child Together time (PACT-parent / child interactions centered on literacy), and Parent Resource Time (parent knowledge of child development and parenting strategies). The program will focus on improving a broad range of competencies related to literacy, such as basic language skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening), communication within the family, parental understanding of child development and positive parenting skills, workplace skills, and strengthening relationships between parents and their children’s schools.

 

The position requires working very closely with the Program Directors, organizing various aspects of the program, supervising staff, coordinating events, and performing the adminitrative duties of the Family Literacy program.
 
Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
 
• Provide leadership and vision in designing and implementing a fun, safe, and educational program for the participants of the Sunnyside Family Literacy Program.
• Conduct adult intake/orientation and assessments according to literacy levels.
• Collect and maintain up to date information on all required documentations and records for DYCD (report cards, writing samples, Intake forms, Surveys, Best Plus test results…)
• Data entry of attendance sheets and other required documents utilizing the DYCD database system known as ASSISTS
• Collaborate with Family Literacy staff and develop curriculum that is thematically based and ensures that instructors are effectively delivering lesson plans.
• Conduct weekly meetings with staff.
• Maintain positive relationships with co-workers, students, parents, and school administration.
• Develop and implement strategies to increase participant enrollment and retention.
• Oversee smooth functioning of daily routines and make improvements as needed.
• Attend DYCD and other agency-wide events; participates in meetings and trainings as directed by Directors.
• Serve as a substitute during instructor’s absences.
• Compose and disseminate information to staff and program participants as needed.
• Perform staff evaluations and classroom observations.
• Coordinate Family Literacy events such as multicultural events, trips, workshops etc. This may require running short errands and occasionally acting as a chaperone.
• Assists with any indirect activities that help promote the mission of Family Literacy.
• Coordinate with and provide assistance to the Sunnyside After School and OST Vacation Camp programs as needed.
•  Help administer other responsibilities that correspond with the Family Literacy Program along with the After School and OST Vacation camp program as assigned by Director.
 
Requirements:
• Experience working with adults and children, exceptional writing skills, ability to conceptualize and communicate ideas, has outstanding organizational skills, interest in working with a team, and familiarity with Latino cultures. 
• Availability during program hours. We operate from Monday through Friday 10-6pm. The program is also open during a number of school holidays during the summer months. 
• College Degree or College Experience.
• Computer literate with knowledge of Excel, Word, and Explorer.
• Sense of humor with an ability to be flexible.
• Bilingual Spanish/English Required.
