PROGRAM:             Grounded and Positioned for Success Program

 

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Sunnyside Community Services (SCS) is a multi-service settlement house located in Western Queens. The SCS Grounded and Positioned for Success Program serves at-risk youth aged 16-21 who reside in under resourced households. Program staff form strong bonds with participants and support them through the attainment of educational and employment goals and milestones. The program is seeking a skilled GED Instructor who has his/her own curriculum and has a demonstrated knowledge of the grammar, reading, writing and essay portion of the exam.

The successful candidate will be able to provide content in a group setting and then break students into smaller groups based on abilities and needs. The GED Prep program will serve two separate cohorts of approximately twelve “Out of School” Youth. Participants are scheduled to take the GED exam 3-months after then have been initially registered for the program. This temporary position is budgeted to conclude in May 2012 and has a 10 hour per weekly commitment.  Program operates from 10am to 3pm.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
-Takes on a student centered approach in the provision of GED grammar, reading, and writing   instruction.

-Conducts regular assessments and adapts instruction to meet individual needs.

-Maintains current knowledge in the subject areas and in the use of alternative teaching techniques.

-Fosters a safe and civil learning environment for effectual teaching and student education.

-Informs students about course requirements, evaluation procedures, and attendance policies. Sets high expectations and acts as role model for students.

-Engages and supports students in reaching their maximum potential.
-Monitors student attendance, progress, and competency attainment. Generate student progress reports.   

-Submits lesson plans to program supervisor.

-Performs other relevant duties as requested by supervisors.



Required Skills/Experience:

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
-B.A. in education or related field 

-Familiarity with the TABE and GED exams

-Two years of teaching experience with at-risk students

-Ability to adapt material and work with a variety of skill levels

-Track record of teaching success

-Spanish-speaking is a plus

-Excellent interpersonal, organizational, verbal and written communications skills

-Cleared background check and fingerprints indicating ability to work with youth.

-Computer literate with working knowledge of Excel, Word, Outlook, Powerpoint, and Explorer.
