Job Description:

JOB DESCRIPTION

The GED program at Sunnyside Community Services is designed for candidates who have not completed high school and whose educational skill levels range from 9th through 12th grade. These classes provide instruction in the basics of passing the GED exam.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Provides 60 hours of instruction in three skill areas of reading, writing and math with testing skill strategies to pass all five content areas of the GED exam. (Classes are on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6PM – 8:30PM)

·    Develops lesson plans, curriculum, course schedule and course teaching materials. Conducts regular assessments and adapts instruction to meet individual needs. Candidate should have familiarity and existing knowledge of GED teaching materials and possess ability to make recommendations.  

• Maintains knowledge of GED testing standards and use of alternative teaching techniques with aptitude for addressing various learning styles. 

§    Fosters a safe, civil and student-centered learning environment for effectual teaching and student education. Informs students about course requirements, evaluation procedures, and attendance policies. Sets high expectations and acts as a role model for students.

·    Facilitates the GED application process and assists candidates in securing GED exam dates. Engages and supports students in reaching their maximum potential.
• Monitors student attendance, progress and competency attainment. Maintains thorough and current student records. Generates student progress reports.

·    Provides weekly guidance and tutoring materials for volunteer tutors


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

- Teaching certification, B.A. in education or related field is required

- Two years of teaching experience with at-risk students, adult learners and/or GED students

- Ability to adapt material and work with a variety of skill levels in a group setting

- Track record of teaching success

- Spanish-speaking is a plus

- Familiarity with the TABE and GED exams

*Note – There are 3 cycles of GED classes occurring between November 2010 and August 2011. The first cycle begins in November and ends in February. This role will be continued for the final 2 cycles if performance standards are met.
