Position Overview:

Sunnyside Community Services (SCS) is a multi-service settlement house located in Western Queens. The SCS Job Readiness Program serves at risk youth aged 16-21 who resdie in under resourced households. Program staff form strong bonds with participants and support them through the attainment of educational and employment goals and milestones. the program is currently seeking a skilled GED instructor to implement a "GED Bootcamp." The GED instructor should have hsi/her own curriculum and have a demonstrated knowledge of all five content areas (particular attention will be focuswd on math, grammar, and reading comprehension). The successful candidate will be able to provide content in a group setting and work with students in smaller groups based on their strengths and needs. The "bootcamp" will serve approximately ten "Out of School Youth" (OSY) who plan to take the exam during spring 2011. This temporary position is budgeted to conclude during Spring 2011 and has a 22 hour per week commitment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Take on a student centered approach in the provision of GED reading, writing and math instruction.
  • Conduct regular assessments and adapt instruction to meet individual needs.
  • Maintain current knowledge in the subject areas and in the use of alternative teaching techniques.
  • Foster a safe and civil learning environment for effectual teaching and student education.
  • Inform students about  course requirements, evaluation procedures, and attendance policies. Set high expectations and act as a role model for students.
  • Help to facilitate the GED application process and assist candidates in securing GED exam dates.
  • Engage and support students in reaching their maximum potential. Monitor student attendance, progress and competency attainment. Maintain thorough and current student records. Generate student progress reports.
  • Provide weekly guidance and tutoring materials for volunteer tutors.
  • Submit lesson plans to program supervisor.
  • Perform other relevant duties as requested by supervisors.

 

Required Skills/Experience:

  • B.A. in education or related field
  • Familiarity with the TABE and GED exams
  • Experience working with and teaching at-risk students
  • Ability to adapt material and work with a variety of skill levels
  • Spanish speaking is a plus

Salary:

Starting at $20 per hour
