Job Description:

 Program Overview and Position Description:

The Group Leader plans, implements and develops project based educational, youth leadership, physical education and healthy living and literacy and arts for 20 participants, ages 10-11 years old, in New Settlement Apartments Multi-Cultural After School Program (MASP). The Group Leader chaperones a group of 20 participants to different locations New York City while following the program’s policies and procedures in a pro-active manner and keeping the safety of the children the primary focus. The Group Leader works closely, assigns and monitors tasks given to the Group Leader Assistant. During the after school, we balance academic enrichment and leadership development through hand-on projects and theme-based learning that encourages critical thinking and creativity.

Overview of New Settlement Apartments and Community Services:

New Settlement Apartments is a non-profit, mixed-income housing and community service organization. We work towards active commitment to neighborhood revitalization, community building and organizing, and positive youth development.  New Settlement currently provides year-round educational, cultural and recreational programs and social services to over 13,500 youth and adults who live in the Southwest Bronx.

Required Skills/Experience:

 Experience Required: Applicants must have experience working with youth. Knowledge of and interest in the arts, science, engineering, mathematics, healthy living and physical education required.  Applicants must have experience developing and leading elementary-school level activities for children; have strong planning and organizational skills; team leadership, behavioral management, and conflict resolution skills; have the ability to supervise in facilitation of daily lesson plans and activities. Teamwork and hands-on teaching ability is a must.

 

Education & Skills Required: College or graduate level student. Bilingual Spanish/English a plus. In order to work with the children, applicants must undergo a background check, in accordance with local regulations.

 

Availability: Must be available for program time Monday-Friday from 1:45-5:30 p.m. and 3 holidays when the schools are closed in June from 8:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. Planning time hours are flexible.  Immediate opening. Starting date: As soon as possible.

Salary and Benefits Offered:

The position is a part-time, temporary position for 17.5 hours weekly. Hourly rate: $14.50.  Potential opportunity for full-time position during the summer.
