Job Description:

 The YWCA of the City of New York is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all.  The YWCA of the City of New York is seeking caring, creative, responsible and reliable Group Leaders.  We are looking for individuals with experience working with middle school students and who are committed to positive youth development.  Group Leaders must be passionate about engaging youth and serving as a positive role model.  Key attributes of a successful Group Leader are as follows: the ability to manage complex and detailed tasks simultaneously, to effectively integrate program philosophy and management policies consistent with organization’s mission and goals, to utilize analytical skills and creativity to implement program initiatives, and the ability to work collaboratively and independently as necessary with key stakeholders and partnering organizations.

Required Skills/Experience:

 Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist and support teaching specialists in engaging students in hands-on activities
  • Ensure classroom management and a positive learning environment
  • Ensure the safety of students during program transitions and while class is in session
  • Provide homework assistance and tutoring
  • Maintain responsibility for program supplies and proper use of all facilities
  • Ensure the engagement of students during program activities
  • Submit required program documentation daily
  • Communicate effectively with Program Director and colleagues
  • Communicate effectively with school-day staff and with parents
  • Attend staff meetings
  • Perform other duties as needed

 

Qualifications:

  • Associates/Bachelor’s Degree in related field or commensurate experience
  • Commitment to promoting YWCA’s social justice mission, educational and youth development philosophy
  • At least two years of experience working with middle school youth
  • Strong capabilities in math, reading and other general academic studies
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent classroom management skills
  • Minimum of 21 years of age 

Salary Range: Part time position; salary commensurate with credentials and experience.
