Job Description: Reading Specialist

 

The Booker T. Washington Reading Specialist is an essential part of our academic components program.  The Reading Specialist provides literacy support to elementary, middle and high school students.  

 

Responsibilities:

  1. Assist in the evaluation of on-going literacy programs and make recommendations for change.
  2. Assist the Master Tutor and Coordinators in implementing reading program.
  3. Help diagnose reading strengths and weaknesses and match these skills with appropriate techniques and materials.
  4. Keep Coordinators and other administrators informed as to new developments in reading.
  5. Work with support staff and school administrators to facilitate the coordination of the reading program with the total curriculum.
  6. Promote interest in reading.
  7. Provide leadership in developing an elementary through high school developmental reading program.
  8. Be responsible for implementing and monitoring the plan of remedial reading instruction. The plan shall address identification, diagnosis and development.
  9. Teach remedial reading as needed.

 

Qualifications:

  1. Must have both Bachelors and Masters Degrees.
  2. Must be a New York State Certified teacher
