Job Description:

The Cabin Counselor is responsible to provide childcare for children with developmental disabilities and to fulfill the following duties:

  • Be directly responsible for the tasks of daily living for two campers at a time.
  • The tasks of daily living include things such as changing clothes, keeping track of clothes and other belongings, daily   hygiene (face washing, tooth brushing, showering, toileting, eating, putting campers to bed, waking them up, etc.)
  • Walking campers from place to place during the program.
  • Engaging campers in the recreational activities at the camp (art/crafts, athletics, cooking, etc.)
  • Assisting with loading and unloading the campers from the bus including lifting campers in and out of wheel chairs and moving luggage.
  • Supervise the campers during sleep hours (Night Duty). Night Duty requires two cabin counselors to be on duty in the cabins while the campers are sleeping. The staff on Night Duty must sleep in the same room with the campers. Staff not on Night Duty may sleep in another room in the same building.
  • Fulfill job responsibilities not listed here that are important to the success of the program.
  • Abide by personnel policies governing staff behavior while staff and campers are in residences at the camper
  • Cabin Counselors are supervised directly by the Cabin Leader
  • Cabin Counselors day begins when the campers awaken and ends when the campers go to sleep. Each Cabin counselor gets an hour break each day.
 
 
 

 

 

The Children's Aid Society runs a respite program in Chappaqua, NY that serves children and teens ages 7-17 with developmental disabilities. These children and teens come from Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Westchester. The children and teens come to the camp for overnights that are offered on weekends and holiday weeks during the year, and one week during the summer. The camp provides 24 hour child care and activities while they are in residence. The program is offered 34 days/year.

 

Required Skills/Experience:

Experience working with children, preferably with special needs children who have developmental disbabilities.
